Ged Melia has written three historically based novels. ‘Family Business’, published in 2020, is predominantly set in Bolton between the years 1920 and 1950. It is a generational tale and tells the story of the rise and fall of a family business, and of the characters whose lives were integrally linked with it. In particular, Edward, a philandering rogue whose misdeeds eventually landed him in Wakefield Prison. ‘A Lancashire Story’ is an immediate prequel, taking place in the three decades before the events in ‘Family Business’. The adult characters in ‘Family Business’ are introduced as children and teenagers within this novel. ‘Liverpool’ is set in 1840s and 1850s Liverpool, and is a story of an impoverished Irish family fleeing overseas to what they thought would be a better life. The novel attempts to deal with the challenges faced by immigrants in a city experiencing rapid change and a variety of externally driven crisis.
