Vauxhall Area

Vauxhall area & Stockdale Street

Then, as now, immigrants tended to congregate in certain areas or enclaves. The Irish were no different during the 1830s, 1840s, and 1850s. Within the city they tended to prefer living close to work, which in Liverpool’s case meant living near the docks. Favoured areas in the north included Scotland Road, Everton, Exchange, and Vauxhall, with Park Road, St. James Street, and Park Lane in the south.

Within the book the family lived in Vauxhall, on and around Stockdale Street, one of the areas with the worst housing, not only in Liverpool but in the whole country.

Believed to be the corner of Marybone and Stockdale Street.

Believed to be Stockdale Street in the mid 1960s, before demolition.

Book Fairs

Book fairs are held throughout the year at various locations in the North West. More information on dates and venues for these fairs may be found elsewhere on this website. The Barlow Book Fair, held in Edgworth, is a member of the North West Book Fairs collective.

Books, ephemera & collectables

We sell antique, vintage and second-hand books, ephemera, and collectable items. Although eclectic in nature we take a particular interest in Lancashire related items.

Novels

Novels written by Ged Melia are available on Amazon, other online book retailers, and in some independent bookshops. Further background detail on the stories and themes within these novels may be found within this website.
