I have been asked several times over the past year whether I would be writing another novel. After taking a break for a couple of years I got around to thinking about a sequel to ‘Family Business’, and have finally made a start. At the moment I do not have a working title, or a timeline for finishing it. However, I do have a few chapters under my belt, and have made some decent progress. Set between 1950 and 1975, it deals with my parent’s generation, plus a bit of mine. I do find it far more challenging to write than my earlier novels. I am not even sure I can call it biographic fiction, given the amount of actual fact that has been used – a problem for another day. What it has done is to provide an opportunity for reminisce about the 1960s and early 1970s: life in Bolton as it was. I am using the same techniques as used in my other novels. In other words, considerable use of historical context to add credibility and reality to the narrative. I’m sure that at least people local to the area will get something out of it.
