Several Bolton pubs are mentioned in the book. Some have survived while others have made way for new uses.
The Pack Horse Hotel, early Twentieth Century. Taken from a contemporary postcard. Still trading as a public house.
Two photos of the Swan Hotel and Churchgate. The one on the left is from a family album and is obviously a record of some sort of event. Undated but pre-WW2. The other one looks like early 1930s and shows the Swan Hotel, Bradshawgate side. The Swan is still operating.
Photos of the Duke of Connaught have been elusive. Below is a contemporary map showing the location of the pub, mission hall, gasholder and streets and roads mentioned in the book. The Duke was demolished in the 1970s to make way for a sliproad into Bolton (A666, St. Peter’s Way). Historic England also have an archive of aerial photographs from the period.
